Historically beautiful – since 1735
Fredriksborg Fortress was considered Sweden's strongest when it was completed in 1735. Its shoreline and the Oxdjup tower would protect the inlet to Stockholm at Oxdjupet, for over 100 years.
Fredriksborg is a national listed building. The fortress is used for history guiding, wedding parties, conferences, exhibitions, music, etc. Good acoustics, high arches and a grand historical setting for the event.
The fortress's officers' buildings – the officers' residence from the 1720s and the Stone Barracks from the 1750s were rebuilt in 2013-2015 into a hotel with preserved older style but modern under the surface with heating and ventilation, and all rooms with bathrooms with heated floors, TV and WiFi.
A restaurant is available in the Stenkasernen barracks or in the orangery next door. In the summer, there is also a large decorated wedding tent and outdoor seating. The hotel is located on a hill with magnificent lake views from north to south and sun all day. Down by the water is the Corps de Garde gun pier, gun turret and a new guest pier for guests' pleasure boats. The narrow Oxdjupet is used by all cruise ships to Stockholm – a spectacular sight from down from the pier or from the top of the hotel.
Fredriksborg is easily reached by car or boat to the hotel's guest jetty. SL bus 439 directly from Slussen or 688 from Vaxholm arrives nearby, as does Vaxholmsbåt 4 to nearby Rindö.
Fredriksborg is located in the middle of the archipelago and close to Vaxholm and can be the perfect hub for a multi-day stay with a day visit to Vaxholm or an archipelago boat out to Möja, Ingmarsö, Sandhamn and others. Grinda, where the Stockholm Archipelago Trail passes, is a 5-minute boat ride away from nearby Lillsved. If you stay for several days, dinner and relaxation await you here when you are back after the day adventure. We are happy to help and advise if you want to rent a kayak, book a fishing trip or maybe sail. The hotel has bicycles for shorter trips in the immediate area with e.g. Lillsved, Skägga, Rindö. You can order a picnic basket, borrow a bike, rent MTB bikes, take a dip in Vretaviken or down by the guest jetty which has a swimming ladder.
Fredriksborg is open every day in the summer, Thursday-Sunday at Christmas dinners and weekends the rest of the year. For private and corporate groups, we are always open by appointment. As an external guest, you can book breakfast or dinner every day that the hotel is open all year round.
Fredriksborg Fortress is open from 1 May to 30 September with daily guided tours of the fortress every day the hotel is open. At 5 pm in Swedish and at 6 pm in English. The history tours take about an hour and you can see the entire fortress with the end in the observation tower on the roof. October-April the gun turret is shown by the water at 5 pm if the sun is up or at 11 am the day after when the gun turret lacks lighting etc.
Welcome to book a hotel breakfast and watch all the cruise ships in the morning glide by down in Oxdjupet, or have lunch, coffee or book a table for the evening.* You eat in Stenkasernen, in the Orangery or outdoors in the summer.
